Grant PUD to Participate in Nuclear Plant Feasibility Study
EPHRATA, WA – Grant PUD has agreed to participate with Energy Northwest and other northwest utilities in studying the feasibility of constructing a small scale modular nuclear plant at the Hanford site.
The modular plant technology, developed by NuScale Power of Corvallis, Ore. and tested by Oregon State University, Idaho National Lab and Nexant-Bechtel, simplifies construction, strengthens safety factors, reduces costs and financial risks and improves reliability.
Grant PUD continues to look for additional energy supply resources to meet anticipated future load growth requirements. The modular nuclear design proposed by NuScale Power may offer a potentially cost effective alternative to meet Grant PUD’s future energy requirements.
Grant PUD will invest $25,000 for Phase 1 pre-development that determines the optimal generation size for the initial project, the adequacy of the proposed site, estimate licensing efforts required for commercial operation and assess the costs for construction and power production.
If the project proves feasible and construction moves forward, Grant PUD will be given an opportunity to participate. Generation from the plant is expected in the 2018 – 2019 timeframe.
Grant PUD is a firm supporter of nuclear energy development. In January 2008, Grant PUD commissioners approved a resolution supporting further development of nuclear power in the northwest. Nuclear technology has favorable environmental characteristics as it emits no greenhouse gasses and the industry has exhibited an unparalleled safety record.
