Commissioners Review Plans for Fiber
First Workshop Held to Review Business Plans
January 21, 2008
EPHRATA, WA – Future plans for the utility’s wholesale fiber optic network were discussed in a workshop with commissioners and staff today. Additional workshops will be scheduled as commissioners finalize plans to extend the fiber network.
Plans presented during the workshop address the commission’s request at a workshop in late 2007 to determine how much of the network could be completed for $50 million or $10 million for the next five years. Analyses show that these funds could extend the network to approximately 80 percent of the county and reach virtually all commercial businesses.
If the commission elects to pursue the options presented, a fiber construction schedule will be developed to build-out to roughly 3,000 homes per year for the next five years. The fiber network is available to approximately 10,500 homes and businesses in the county today.
Any plan adopted by the commission will be continually reviewed and adaptations will be made yearly or as needed based on analysis of the assumptions contained in the plan.
No decisions were made during today’s presentation. Regular workshops with the commission will be held throughout the year to analyze options moving forward.
