Notice to Boaters
Columbia River Levels May Change Over Labor Day weekend
August 24, 2007

EPHRATA, WA – Grant County PUD encourages boaters and recreators along the Columbia River to watch for possible changes in river levels from August 31 through September 4 due to hydropower operations at dams up and down the river.

River levels can fluctuate at any time of the year, however during holiday weekends, hydro operations can fluctuate because of fish protection efforts, varying power needs and power scheduling.  The Columbia River is a coordinated river system.  The Bonneville Power Association and other utilities have contractual rights and obligations over operations, which can impact water levels.  Over Labor Day weekend, Grant PUD will make every effort to keep the reservoirs behind Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams filled for recreation activities.

Boaters should be mindful of debris, rocks and underwater hazards at all times on the Columbia River.  Boaters that pull onto beaches can find themselves stranded if the water drops suddenly, and conditions at boat launches can be impacted.

For information on river levels, please visit Grant PUD’s Website at www.gcpud.org.
