Low Income Senior Citizen Rate Offered by Grant County PUD

July 31, 2006

Ephrata, WA – A residential power use rate for low income senior citizens was adopted by Grant County Public Utility District Commissioners on Monday, July 31. The rate, for senior citizens who qualify, will go into effect November 1.

Qualified low income senior citizens will receive a discount equal to 20 percent of their monthly power bill, exclusive of taxes. The discount will be applied only to the residential service power bill at the Grant PUD customer’s primary dwelling.

There are just two qualifying elements for this new power rate: A) a customer who is 62 years old or older, and B) with a total household income including customer’s spouse or co-tenant, that is equal to or less than 125 percent of the poverty guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Examples of the current income thresholds for 125 percent of the poverty guideline are: 1) a one-person household at or less than $12,250 annual income, 2) a two-person household at or less than $16,500, 3) a three-person household at or less than $20,750, and 4) a four-person household at or less than $25,000.

The North Columbia Community Action Council (NCCAC) located in Moses Lake will be the lead agency for enrollment and documentation processes. When NCCAC has verified that a customer meets the qualifications for the low income senior citizen power rate, the agency will provide the customer with a statement of eligibility to be given to Grant County PUD. Upon receipt of that eligibility statement, Grant PUD customer service personnel at any of the PUD’s local offices will activate the discount to start with the next billing period.

“Senior citizens represent many of Grant County PUD’s long-time customers, said Debbie Lowe, Grant PUD customer service manager. “We are pleased to be able to offer this reduced rate and appreciate the help from local family assistance agencies in developing this option for our seniors.
