Be Responsible.

As the skipper of your boat, it’s your responsibility to ensure the safety of your passengers and crew. That means reviewing emergency equipment and procedures and informing all on board of the rules of safe boating.

Your Safe Boating List:

Safety accessories. Never use your boat without carrying all required safety accessories, such as fire extinguishers, flares and Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices, and know how to use them.

Loading. Load your boat correctly. Loading it off balance or overloading could cause it to swamp or capsize and limit its ability to stay afloat.

Play it safe. Before heading out on the water, check the weather and make a trip plan – and leave a copy with a friend, relative or local police department official.

Refueling. Use extreme care. Most fires and explosions happen during or after refueling.

Propellers. Persons in the water can be seriously injured if struck by a rotating propeller. Operate the motor only when the operator is seated securely at the controls

Alcohol affects your judgement. Nine out of ten boating deaths are from drowning and about half of these involve alcohol.

Proper seating. Always sit in proper seats while underway. Never sit on the backs of seats or gunwhales.

Know the rules of the road. Take a boating safety class offered by your local Coast Guard Auxiliary or Red Cross.

Please be safe, not sorry.
