Electricity is all around you.

It is the most common energy source and it is very powerful.

Contact with electricity is dangerous.
It can cause electrical shock, burns or even death if the shock is severe.

Play it safe outdoors!

Flying a Kite

Materials: NEVER use wire, tinsel or any metal in your kite or string – they may conduct electricity.

Power lines: NEVER fly a kite near power lines. Electricity could go right down the string to you. Choose a wide open space.

Caught toys: If your kite gets caught in a power line. LEAVE IT THERE. Ask your parents to call the PUD and someone will come help you.

Play it safe indoors too!

Damaged equipment: If you see worn wires, sparks or smoke from electrical equipment or if an appliance does not work right, DON”T touch it. Have your parents shut off the power at its source.

Electrical Fire: If you see smoke coming from wires, electric motors, etc. ask your parents to shut off the power and call the fire department or the PUD. NEVER throw water on an electrical fire.

Know what to do

Electrical shock: NEVER touch a person being shocked. Turn off the power if possible. Get help.

Downed wire: Stay away from the wire. Don’t touch anything or anyone that’s touching it. Get help.

If the wire is touching a vehicle that you are inside of, wait for help. If you must get out, jump clear – don’t touch the ground and the vehicle at the same time.

Electrical storms: Get inside. If you can’t, go to low ground and crouch down.
