Grant PUD celebrates new license for its Columbia River dams
Ensures renewable hydropower and natural resource protection for decades to come
EPHRATA, WA –The federal government awarded Grant PUD a new hydropower license giving Grant PUD commissioners, employees and county residents assurance that Priest Rapids Project power will be available to them as a source of clean, renewable, carbon-free and affordable energy for years into the future. Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams
Grant County PUD owns and operates the Priest Rapids Hydroelectric Project, which consists of two hydroelectric developments on the Columbia River: Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams. On October 21, 1954, the Federal Power Commission (now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) issued a permit to Grant PUD authorizing the construction of the Priest Rapids Project. Priest Rapids Dam began operation in 1959 and Wanapum Dam went on-line in 1963. The original license for the Priest Rapids Project expired on October 31, 2005 and the project is currently operating under an annual license.
Latest Relicensing News
Final Environmental Impact Statement Issued
On November 17, 2006, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued the FinalEnvironmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Priest Rapids Project.
The final EIS contains FERC staff’s analysis regarding Grant PUD’s Final License Application proposal and the alternatives for relicensing the Priest Rapids Project. The final EIS documents the views of the FERC Commission staff and of government agencies, non-government organizations, affected Indian tribes, the public, and the license applicant.
