Spring is here. As you work to spruce up your yard, remember to preserve vegetated area adjacent to the river. Before undertaking any type of construction or landscaping near the shoreline, be sure to contact Grant PUD. Removing/disturbing vegetation from Grant PUD property requires prior written permission. Please do not dispose of yard waste on Grant PUD property.
Here are some gardening tips that are friendly to the environment and the Columbia River:
- Keep grass clippings, pruned branches and other yard waste away from the high water line. These materials create a potential source of river pollution in the form of noxious weed seeds and harmful fertilizer-based nitrogen.
- Composting is great, but be careful where you dump. Yard waste interrupts natural processes and prohibits native plants from growing in these areas. This material can kill everything it covers, including tree roots. Be cautious of your yard waste as it may present a fire hazard, attract rodents or contribute to the instability of slopes.
- Minimize the amount of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides your yard. Try to incorporate native species that require little to no specialized care and extra water.
