The Priest Rapids Fish Bypass project will help Grant PUD in meeting a goal of 95% survival of the juvenile salmonids passing Priest Rapids Dam and 86.49% survival through the Priest Rapids Project (both reservoirs & dams). The bypass was designed and extensively modeled in research test facilities located at the University of Iowa’s Institute of Hydraulic Research.

Project Benefits:

  • Spill reduction: The bypass is designed to operate at 27 thousand cubic feet per second (kcfs) through the spillway, significantly less than the normal 110 kcfs.
  • Provides a non-turbine route for smolts (young salmon) past the dam.
  • Minimizes harmful gas in the river thus reducing fish mortality.
