Two of the largest floods in history (one of lava and one of water) together with the vast Columbia Basin Irrigation Project create a once-barren landscape now traced with unique lakes, ponds and waterways. The Columbia River and vast miles of irrigation waterways make the county optimal for kayaking, fishing, hunting and every water sport imaginable. Orchards, vineyards and locally grown fresh produce fuel several wineries and a thriving food processing industry.
