The Energy Services Department of Grant County PUD provides Alternative Energy displays. The Moses Lake local office has a solar system available for viewing. Another display is a residential application in the futuristic Zero Energy Home designed for educational purposes. This is a nationally known concept that is picking-up momentum as energy prices hit new highs in various parts of the country. It is presently not cost-effective to install net-metered/grid tied photovoltaic (PV) systems in Grant County. Prices for this technology are falling, but the cost of power produced by PV systems is still from around 4 to 8 times the current PUD residential rate.

Off-Grid Alternative Energy Options

If extending the power grid to a remote location is cost prohibitive, then the alternatives we display may be cost-effective now and we are willing to help you assess your options. Due to the high initial cost of alternative energy systems, most independent power systems typically produce just 10 to 25 percent of the electricity consumed by the typical home. Rather than make major life-style changes, you can retain the advantages that electricity offers while consuming a small percentage of the power that others consume.

The first step is to design the whole house to be radically energy-efficient. You may use passive solar options and/or select an alternative fuel like propane for space heating, water heating, clothes drying, and cooking. The next step is to carefully select extremely energy-efficient appliances and products. It is also important to install extra switches to eliminate phantom and idling loads. After meeting the above measures, a practical and affordable solar electric system (or wind) can provide electricity for your home.

If you are interested in constructing an off-grid home or for more information and to see our Photovoltaic Displays, contact John Molitor at 754-6601.
