Energy Star Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL)
We continue to promote the use of energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs that reduce energy use up to 75% over incandescent bulbs and typically last as long as 13 regular bulbs. Look for the Energy Star sticker when you purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Energy-Efficient LED (light emitting diode) Lights
We promote the use of energy-efficient LED light bulbs that drastically reduce energy use and typically last more than 100,000 hours. Most incandescent bulbs last about 750 hours and compact bulb life is up to 10,000 hours.
Look for LED Christmas lights, flashlights, lanterns, and vehicle lights. Some auto manufacturers are beginning to use LED lights for headlights that can easily last longer than the useful life of the car.
CFL Disposal
Home disposal of CFL’s is easy. Simply double bag used bulbs and place them in the garbage.
Mercury and CFLs
All fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury; however, the use of CFLs still results in a net reduction of mercury compared to incandescent bulbs. This is because of the lower energy use. Using less electricity equals lower mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Lower-mercury bulbs are also becoming more available. Even though CFLs result in a net reduction of mercury they require careful disposal. Homeowners should double bag used bulbs and place them in the garbage. CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs can be taken to an approved hazardous waste facility. An additional option is to encourage retailers who sell CFLs to recycle them.
