Public Power

Public power is an important American institution; it is an expression of the American ideal that places local citizens in control.  Unlike private, shareholder-owned companies, public power companies are public service institutions and do not set rates in order to pay dividends.  Success is measured by how much money stays within the community through low rates and contributions to the local economy, not how much goes out to stockholders.  As a non-profit utility, we serve the residents of Grant County.  All residents of Grant County are both customers and owners of this utility, able to exercise a powerful voice in utility decisions in open meetings and at the ballot box.

Public Power Facts:

  • On a national basis, public power customers pay average utility rates that are about 10 percent less than those paid by private power customers.

  • On average, public power systems return to state and local governments in-lieu-of-tax payments and other contributions that are 15 percent greater than state and local taxes paid by private power companies.

  • Public power systems lower costs through their partnerships with other local government departments and other organizations.  More than 70 joint action agencies operate within states or regions offering local utilities power or other services.
